Social media went into meltdown as Jamaican superstar and ‘the greatest sprinter of all time’ Usain Bolt revealed to his followers that he will reveal which football club he has signed for on Tuesday 27th February. What Are The Odds looks at the Usain Bolt next club odds via Ladbrokes with less than 24 hours until the big reveal.
The eight-time Olympic gold medalist has long harboured ambitions of playing professional football, training with Borussia Dortmund and a lifelong Manchester United fan - the 31-year old now appears destined to sign a contract with a yet unnamed football club.
The current favourites are South African side Mamelodi Sundowns at 7/4 (2.75). Usain Bolt trained with the Sundowns back in January and would be the most likely option considering he has never played at any kind of professional level - so the South African side would certainly be more a realistic ‘gateway’ into football for Bolt.
If the move turns into less about gametime and more about a PR exercise, then the more likely option could be the soon to launch MLS Miami franchise by David Beckham. The Florida-based club would be an ideal setting for Bolt - location and a fan-base that would certainly cause an initial impact in gate receipts when Miami play their first competitive game in MLS. Bolt even cheekily asked Beckham via social media for a chance to play striker in Miami upon the club’s reveal - odds of 7/2 (4.50) are on-offer from Ladbrokes.
No one really knows how good Usain Bolt is at football, but to jump straight in at one of Europe’s top two clubs? That may be a step too far, either club would see it as a good business with shirt sales and the obvious press coverage. Then again could we see the world’s fastest man line-up alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez at Old Trafford or Mario Gotze at the Westfalstadion?
You can find out Usain Bolt’s next club on Tuesday, likely to be revealed across all media and his social channels.
