Stewart Downing has been a man on the fringes in the last couple of months at Middlesbrough, with Aitor Karanka seemingly favouring the former England international as an impact sub rather than a starter. Reports are now suggesting the club would be willing to see Downing leave the club - What Are The Odds looks at who the leading candidates are to take on the 32-year old English winger.
Sam Allardyce has worked with Stewart Downing in the past at West Ham and it’s his Crystal Palace side that are leading the market at 2/7 (1.29) to make him a January edition at the struggling south London club. Resources in the wide areas are stretched for Palace now, with Wilfried Zaha away on African Cup of Nations duty and Bakary Sako linked with a move away - Downing would add that necessary experience during a key set of fixtures that could lead to survival or relegation for Big Sam’s Eagles.
Former club Aston Villa, where Downing produced some of his best football to subsequently move on to Liverpool, are interested in submitting a bid in the January transfer window. Albeit they are further back at 8/1 (9.00) to get this one over the line, and would Downing fancy a step back down to the Championship? Time will tell.
Another of Downing’s former clubs, Sunderland, are also in the mixer at 16/1 (17.0), however with Boro being a direct rival in the league and both clubs fighting for survival, a move back to the Black Cats would seem unlikely at this point. West Ham (yet another former club) would be a less controversial choice and they too are priced at 16/1 (17.0).
Birmingham City, with cash to spend are also looking to kick on in the second half of the season after a few bad results under new boss Gianfranco Zola. Stewart Downing would fit the bill in a squad lacking top level experience, and fans would see someone like a Downing as the creative spark needed to reboot the second city’s playoff bid. Odds of 18/1 (19.0) could be worth watching if a club like Crystal Palace suddenly drops out of the running.
Derby County at 20/1 (21.0) and Swansea City at 25/1 (26.0) are two other bets worth monitoring as the speculation increases. Both want new additions for different reasons, and a player with the experience of Stewart Downing would likely appeal to both Steve McClaren and Swans boss Paul Clement.
