Newcastle are flying high at the top of the Sky Bet Championship and there’s some more interesting news developing today as the odds on Steven Gerrard joining the club have been cut significantly with a price of just 3/1 (4.00) to sign with Sky Bet.
Bookmakers have backed Steven Gerrard to end his career in Europe rather than the US, after the former England international seemingly said goodbye to LA Galaxy via his Instagram account saying ‘I will miss your LA’. His contract will expire at the end of the year and will be free to sign with a new club as of January 1st 2017.
However, despite this big odds shift towards joining Newcastle it’s worth remembering that Gerrard seemingly has an indifferent relationship with Rafa Benitez, claiming that the two were ‘never close’ and that he was of the impression that Benitez never ‘liked me as a person’. This according to his autobiography and a report from the Liverpool Echo in 2015.
Former boss Brendan Rodgers at Celtic is still keen to bring him to Glasgow and help the club to another league title, even though it would seem that the Hoops are walking to the title as early as November. The odds have lengthened slightly to 5/1 (6.00) on such a move materialising but would be more likely you’d expect than a move to Newcastle - however who’s to say that any difference of opinion between Benitez and Gerrard hasn’t been put to bed?
Would Jurgen Klopp want Steven Gerrard the player back in January or Gerrard the retired player, now staff member instead? You’d imagine the latter is more likely with Liverpool top of the league and hardly in-need of a 36 year old midfielder who hardly shone brightly even in the MLS with Galaxy. Odds of 12/1 (13.00) suggest it's a lengthy bet.
How about a move to a European club outside of the UK? BetVictor are offering odds of 12/1 (13.00) on Gerrard moving to Germany, France, Italy or Spain. It would appear unlikely but anything is possible.
