Carlos Carvalhal is out at Hillsborough and the Owls are targeting a new manager to inject new life into their season which is in danger of continuing to spiral downwards after a list of poor results for a club that has been part of the playoff mix the last two seasons. Interestingly Garry Monk is the current market favourite with odds of 13/5 (3.60) – Monk who was sacked as Middlesbrough boss last oversaw victory (before getting the sack) against Sheffield Wednesday; football can be a funny old game.

Lee Bullen, the current caretaker boss at the Owls is the second favourite with odds 10/3 (4.33), which is unsurprising as he helped guide the club to a hugely impressive Boxing Day victory away at Nottingham Forest and can help further his own case for the top job with another win at Brentford at the weekend. The 46-year old is a former Sheff Wed captain and commands the respect of the Sheffield faithful.

Aitor Karanka is another being linked with odds of 5/1 (6.00) and would be a safe option considering his track record of getting Middlesbrough promoted to the Premier League - however he has been linked to a fair few jobs in the Championship since his departure and has failed to get any of them for one reason or another. As an outside option this could be ‘one to watch’ but at the moment it appears the Spaniard is just making up the numbers in the betting market.

Another interesting outside shout is the former Swansea City manager Paul Clement at 10/1 (11.0). Clement had a pretty successful but short spell at Derby County, only to be sacked with the club just a few points off the top of the Championship. He guided Swansea to safety last season but a poor run leading to Christmas saw the former Bayern and PSG assistant get the boot.
