Los Angeles Rams Relocation Bodes Badly for 2016 Season

Wed, 17 August 2016, 13:21

The National Football League will return to Los Angeles for the 2016 season after it emerged Rams owner Stan Kroenke succeeded in sanctioning g a relocation, but the omens look bad for their new campaign.

In total, 16 NFL franchises have relocated since the league’s inauguration in 1920, and history dictates a struggle is on the cards for the Rams immediately following their move to Memorial Coliseum.

Of the 16 teams to have relocated, only three have managed to make the play-offs in the season immediately following the move—or 19%—while 13 have ended their terms at the first hurdle.

What’s more, none of the last six relocated teams—dating back to the Baltimore Colts’ move to Indianapolis in 1984—have managed to end their first season after moving with a positive regular season record.

Lucky Moves

That being said, there is evidence to suggest relocating can (on occasion) be a positive move in the short term. Two of the three teams to have made the play-offs in the season immediately after moving have gone one further by also winning the Super Bowl in those terms.

However, those two teams were the Chicago Staleys in 1921 (prior to being renamed the Bears) and the Washington Redskins following their move from Boston in 1937.
