You don’t have to be fluent in Portuguese to guess that the Primeira Liga is the top flight of football in Portugal. Under the organisation of the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional, the Primeira Liga consists of 18 teams, all of whom start the season dreaming of title glory. Unfortunately for wannabe Portuguese Leicesters, the teams at the top of the Primeira Liga are very strong compared to the rest. This is reflected both in the Portuguese League winner odds and the history of the competition which shows that Benfica have been crowned champions an amazing 35 times.
Each season the fixtures for the Primeira Liga are decided by a draw. No matter the order, all of the 18 teams play one another two times – once at home and once away. Unlike some European leagues, the situation in terms of European qualification is fairly straightforward in the Primeira Liga. The top two teams are each entered into the Champions League groups stage while the third placed side have to come through the playoff stage of qualification. The teams who finish in fourth and fifth are given a place in Europa League qualifying although that is sometimes extended to the team in sixth subject to the winner of the Portuguese cup.
You will find plenty of competition from the biggest bookies in terms of Portuguese Primeira Liga odds at the top of the table. But there is also a fair amount to get excited about at the bottom. Whoever finishes the season in the bottom two places after 34 games gets automatically relegated to the LigaPro. That is a fate that no team wants so the fight to avoid the drop can often continue into the dying stages of the league campaign.
The quality of the Primeira Liga is clearly improving as UEFA now rank it as one of the top five leagues in Europe. It’s also a very interesting prospect for football betting and a league which is well worth brushing up on.
