Japan was the first country to have a semi-professional Womenâs Football League. The L. League was introduced in 1989 and still exists today.

However, in 1921, the Football Association banned womenâs football teams from playing at stadiums that allowed spectators to watch, a ban that wasnât lifted until 1971. As such, the popularity of the womenâs game drastically reduced.
